The Army Cadet Force is a national voluntary youth organisation with a membership of over 45,000 12 to 18-year-old boys and girls. It operates in over 1700 locations all over the UK. Its aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life.
Based in Tulse Hill the 74 Fusiliers welcomes cadets from around the local area. The Deputy Lieutenant met and talked to the cadets where he learned how they gain a huge range of life skills by joining the cadets.
There are lots of misconceptions about the cadets. For instance, it is purely about recruiting for the army. However, talking to the recruits the DL found that few, if any, intended to join the army. However, they clearly were getting far more from their involvement such as a sense of public service and a desire to go on and serve in other ways.
