Christopher Wellbelove DL

Former Mayor of Lambeth, Christopher Wellbelove, has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Greater London. And has taken over as the Representative Deputy Lieutenant (DL) for Lambeth.

Christopher has been commissioned by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE, and joins Representative Deputy Lieutenants in each London Borough (except the City of London) who serve communities across Greater London and assist the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out his role as The Queen’s representative in the capital. The Lieutenancy supports the Monarch and the Royal Family in Greater London, and aims to be a bridge-builder, connecting individuals, organisations and social networks to enhance Londoners’ sense of belonging and thus increase social inclusion within the capital.

Christopher, who stood down as a Lambeth Councillor earlier this year, has been one of very few Councillors to serve twice as The Mayor of the Borough during his 16 years tenure. During his times as Mayor he supported a number of charities such as Trinity Hospice and Mosaic Clubhouse. He has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of issues around domestic abuse and mental ill-health, with a focus on male suicide and LGBTQ+ rights.  Christopher is of mixed heritage, British / West Indian decent and is the founder and director of Mixed Heritage Day.

Responding to his appointment Christopher said “I am so excited by the opportunity to serve my Borough as its Representative Deputy Lieutenant, supporting the great work being done by the Lord-Lieutenant and his Deputies.  I look forward to working to increase the Lieutenancy’s relevance to the many different communities across the Borough who may not have engaged with the Lieutenancy before.”

Christopher replaces Ms Rosi Prescott DL, who has served as the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Lambeth since 2009 and is now assuming the role in Hounslow. Speaking of the appointment she said “Christopher was a popular, hardworking and highly effective Mayor during both his tenures as well as throughout his time as a long-serving Lambeth Councillor. I have been immensely proud to serve Lambeth as its Representative Deputy Lieutenant for thirteen years but I simply cannot think of a better person to continue the work of building awareness of the Lieutenancy within, and further developing relationships across, the Borough. I greatly look forward to liaising with Christopher in his new role in future cross-Borough initiatives”.
