The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to Brixton House, a new theatre and arts centre in the heart of Brixton’s local community, to meet some of the young people involved in Elevate.
Elevate is Lambeth’s mission to open up the creative and cultural sector to every young person in the borough. The Duke and Duchess were met by ‘Elevators’ who are Elevate’s youth advisory group.
These young creatives work at the heart of Elevate to shape and champion the mission. The Elevators take an important role in decision-making and get involved in project work across the programme.
The Duke and Duchess toured the studios, meeting young people from various projects linked with Elevate and Brixton House.
Different groups demonstrated filming, editing and photography and their Royal Highnesses were shown how to use the various pieces of equipment and heard about a project by Oxygen Arts who recently produced a film highlighting the experiences of Lambeth’s Windrush generation. The Duke and Duchess went on to meet a group of young people who are descendants of Windrush.
