Lambeth coat of arms

Each year Lambeth council elects a Civic Mayor, who is the first citizen of the borough representing it at civic events and chairing council meetings. The Mayor is selected by councillors, which differs from some boroughs and city Mayors who are directly elected and run the administration. Where you have a civic Mayor the administration is led by the leader of the council.

This year’s Mayor is Councillor Sarbaz Barznji, who came to the UK as a teenage refugee from Iraq and gave his declaration of office first in Kurdish and then in English.

The Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Lambeth, Christopher Wellbelove, welcomed his appointment and has been working closely with the Mayor as he prepared for his appointment. The Deputy Lieutenant, previously served as Mayor of Lambeth on two occasions and aims to support Lambeth’s Mayors maximise their impact during their Mayoral year.
