Facebook have enhanced the ‘political views’ element of users Facebook profiles. Previously you had choices that varied from Very Conservative to Very Liberal – which did not always reflect the political landscape outside the USA. In the UK many Labour Party supporters were forced to describe themselves as very Liberal or leaving the option blank.
Facebook users can now select from a wide selection of parties, in the UK you cannot currently automatically select the BNP or the Official Monster Raving Looney Party, though their supporters could still type this and save it if they really want people to know who they support.
Without doubt this element will feature in targeted advertising and could be used by politicians to target both their supporters or more interestingly their opponents.
